Summer Optometry Experience (SOE)

SOE virtual sessions will run June 30 - July 23, 2020, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. CT. The program will offer opportunities to learn more about the profession of Optometry as well as the UIWRSO student life, academic, and clinical experiences. Virtual sessions will be lead by alumni, faculty, staff, and administration with current student panels offered throughout.

Module 1: Discover Optometry, Week of June 29, 2020

Topic 1a: Eye Love Optometry

Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 6 p.m.

Presenter: Dr. Anthony Vanrachack, UIWRSO Class of 2016

Explore the profession of Optometry with recent UIWRSO alumni. Learn more about the benefits of a career in Optometry and what our UIWRSO alumni love most about their mode of practice and profession.

Topic 1b: Optometry Gives Back

Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 6 p.m.

Presenter: Dr. Russell Coates, Associate Professor and Director of Outreach Programs

Dr. Coates will present on the importance of our outreach programs both nationally and abroad, how these opportunities connect to the Mission of the institution, and the impact that the mission trips have on our students' clinical development. The virtual session will also include a student panel of current students who will speak about their mission trip experience.


Module 2: UIWRSO Student Life Experience, Week of July 6, 2020

Topic 2a: Student Life Overview

Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at 6 p.m.

Presenter: Grace Rios, Student Support Services Coordinator

Ms. Rios will present on the student life experience at UIWRSO including an overview of student engagement and student organizations. The virtual session will include a panel of current student organization officers who can provide unique insight on student life at UIWRSO.

Topic 2b: The Future of Optometry

July 9, 2020 at 6 p.m.

Presenter: Dr. Timothy Wingert, Dean and Professor of the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry

Dr. Wingert will offer an overview of where the profession of Optometry is going and how UIWRSO is preparing future leaders in the profession.

Module 3: UIWRSO Academic Experience, Week of July 13, 2020

Topic 3a: Academic Success at UIWRSO

July 14, 2020 at 6 p.m.

Presenter: Dr. Srihari Narayanan, Professor and Chief of the Adult/Primary Care Service 

Dr. Narayanan will present on the academic curriculum at UIWRSO with special focus on the first professional year to include academic support initiatives and how students can be successful in the program. You will also hear from a panel of current students who will offer their insight on student success at UIWRSO.

Topic 3b: Optometric Research in Focus

July 16, 2020 at 6 p.m.

Presenter: Dr. Jeff Rabin, Professor and Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies, Research and Assessment

Dr. Rabin will present on research opportunities at UIWRSO to include a special focus on the Summer Fellowship Training Program (SFTP). You will also hear from a panel of current students who have participated in SFTP and can speak to the unique experience.

Module 4: UIWRSO Clinical Experience, Week of July 20, 2020

Topic 4a: Clinical Development at UIWRSO

July 21, 2020 at 6 p.m.

Presenter: Dr. Matt Valdes, Assistant Professor

Dr. Valdes will present an overview of the clinical curriculum at UIWRSO to include insight on our student's clinical progression with special focus on clinical rotations in years three and four. You will also hear from current students on their clinical experience at UIWRSO.

Topic 4b: Sports Vision Service Preview

July 23, 2020 at 6 p.m.

Presenter: Dr. Allison Cronin, Clinical Assistant Professor and Chief of Sports and Vision Enhancement Service

Dr. Cronin will present on the UIWRSO Sports and Vision Enhancement Service. She will discuss how the service was developed, the patients we serve, and how this rotation impacts our student's clinical development. You will also hear from current students who have a special interest in Sports Vision and their experiences in our Sports Vision rotation.
