Advanced Technology
In preparation for a future as a successful optometrist, the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry is committed to the providing state-of-the-art technology in both academics and clinical settings. Students will benefit by learning on 2 different virtual reality platforms to enhance their clinical preparation.
Z-Space
Through this technology, students are able to develop an understanding of anatomy that extends beyond the textbook or plastic models. In virtual reality, 3D environment, still images can be captured of the different layers of the brain encompassing any possible angle imaginable.
Indirect Binocular Ophthalmoscopy
One examination procedure — called binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy or BIO for short — may be the most difficult and stress-provoking examination technique new clinical students face.
In addition to regular supervised exams on patients, using a traditional instrument, Rosenberg School of Optometry students can improve their clinical examination techniques and reasoning skills by using the Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscope Simulation System/Eyesi, an augmented reality learning tool.
iPads
Each new student is issued an Apple iPad at the time when they enter the program. Students will enjoy lifelong access to all of their textbooks through Vital Source and engage in exams through Exemplify software. Additionally, students will have access to apps that will enhance their learning experience, both in and out of the classroom.
SMART Boards
Two of the student laboratories are equipped with SMART Boards. These interactive technologies help to provide a greater level of detail and depth to faculty instruction in preparation for clinical rotations.
