Program Description

The resident will provide optometric care to patients with a diverse range of conditions in the Eye Institute of the Rosenberg School of Optometry and its affiliated clinics, with an emphasis on developing skills and confidence in the management of ocular disease. The resident will also have the opportunity to fit specialty contact lenses and see pediatric patients. The resident shall also rotate through various external clinics in the San Antonio area that are affiliated with the Rosenberg School of Optometry, including Retina and Uveitis Consultants of Texas, South Texas Eye Institute, and William E. Sponsel, MD, encompassing retina, cornea and glaucoma subspecialties respectively. The resident shall also have opportunities to participate in clinical research and a variety of didactic and seminar programs on topics related to clinical optometry including delivering continuing education lectures. The resident has the opportunity to work with a faculty mentor to develop and deliver lectures on the topics of ocular disease and to teach advanced skills to fourth-year optometry students. Lastly, in keeping with the University of the Incarnate Word's founding Mission, residents are encouraged to participate in RSO’s international missions program to Latin America, where they work shoulder-to-shoulder with other healthcare professionals and subspecialties to prevent blindness in underserved communities and share their experience at regional and local symposiums.

Program Description

The 12-month residency program involves providing optometric care to patients with a diverse range of ocular conditions at the BAMC Optometry Department and at affiliated clinics. There is also a 24-month combined Master in Health Administration (MHA)/Primary Care Optometry Residency that involves part-time residency and part-time classes toward an MHA degree. These programs are only available to active-duty Army optometrists through the Long Term Health Education and Training Program.
