Fort Worth Clinic for Optometry Students
The Community Eye Clinic in Fort Worth, Texas is jointly owned by the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry and the University of Houston College of Optometry. It is the only jointly owned clinic by two optometry schools in existence. The Clinic is partnered with the City of Fort Worth, Alcon, and the First Christian Church of Fort Worth. The Community Eye Clinic provides primary care and ocular disease services to all citizens of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. It specifically functions as a safety net eye care provider to service underserved citizens, people with no insurance, and people who are underinsured. The Community Eye Clinic is staffed with two full-time faculty members and has eight externs at any one time. UIWRSO and UHCO uses the Community Eye Clinic as an externship site where each school assigns four externs who rotate at the location for an entire semester. The Community Eye Clinic provides eye and vision care for all age groups and has an unusually high percentage of patients with ocular disease such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy due to the demographics of the population served.
