Clinical Assistant Professor and Chief Bowden Eye Care and Health Center

Dr. Janet Summers is an optometrist from Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from Chatham University with a BS in Biology. She then attended the PA School of Optometry Salus University in Philadelphia where she obtained a BS in Vision Science and the Doctor of Optometry degrees, receiving a clinical excellence citation, gaining her membership in the Gold Key Society. Her externships were in primary care settings, including Genesee Valley Group Health Plan in Rochester NY, Cumberland Regional Health Plan in New Jersey, and Everett and Hurite Associates in Pittsburgh. She obtained certifications as a Managed Healthcare Professional and Nutraceuticals for Healthcare Professionals. Dr. Summers was appointed Chief of Optometry at Penn Group Health Plan in Pittsburgh where she supervised seven eye care departments in multidisciplinary clinics. She established five private practices where she precepted optometry students from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. She served as Chair of Continuing Education for the Western PA Optometric Society and as an adjunct professor in anatomy and physiology for the LPN students at Chatham. Dr. Summers served on the Allegheny County Board of Health and in the eye care clinic at the Pittsburgh VA hospital. As a two-term Chair of the Pennsylvania Board of Optometry and National Board examiner, Dr. Summers became a Regional Quality Assurance Reviewer and was subsequently recruited to San Antonio as a Vice President of Clinical Standards and Medical Director. There she was nominated for the Jefferson Award for Public Service at the national level. She joined the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry in 2018 as a clinical professor and mission trip leader, taking her teams to Panama and Guatemala. Dr. Summers obtained an MS in Organizational Development and Leadership from the University of the Incarnate Word School of Professional Studies in 2022, graduating with distinction. She currently serves as Chief of the UIW RSO Bowden Eye Care and Health Center in San Antonio.
