Dr. Jeannette Wong-Powell grew up in Mexico in the field of optometry where she developed a passion for full-scope optometric practice and patient care. She then received her undergraduate degree at one of UIW’s sister institutions, Our Lady of the Lake University, where she majored in biology and enjoyed a close relationship with generous mentors who modeled genuine interest in student success. After her bachelor’s degree, Dr. Wong-Powell was accepted by the University of Houston College of Optometry with a recruitment scholarship, earned the OD degree in 2010 and went on to do residency in Ocular Disease at the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System in Fort Wayne. Dr. Wong-Powell later accepted a faculty position at RSO in 2012 and spent many years teaching labs, clinics, academic courses and leading international mission trips for which she was the recipient of UIW’s 2022 Faculty Service-Learning Award and became a Fulbright specialist. From 2019 to 2022, she served as the Primary Care and Ocular Disease Residency Coordinator at UIWRSO. Dr. Wong-Powell’s interests include glaucoma, retina, contact lenses, neuro-ophthalmic disorders, pediatrics, ophthalmic optics and sports vision. She is also passionate about residency training and transformational service-learning opportunities for students.
